FAQ

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) aims to help individuals manage intense emotions, improve interpersonal relationships, and develop effective coping skills. It combines elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with concepts of mindfulness and acceptance. DBT involves learning and practicing coping skills in a group setting.

DBT consists of four modules. Mindfulness module teaches us how to become more aware of what is happening in the present moment, both within our bodies but also in our environment. Distress tolerance teaches us how to cope with powerful intense emotions. Emotion regulation helps us to understand what our emotions are trying to tell us, and how we can express them effectively. Interpersonal effectiveness focuses on how to be assertive, and build meaningful relationships.

DBT was initially developed for borderline personality disorder, but it has also been found effective for various mental health conditions, such as anxiety, trauma, depression, substance use and many more. It can be helpful for individuals with difficulties regulating emotions, engaging in self-destructive behaviors, struggling with self-esteem, experiencing relationship problems, engaging in impulsive behaviors, or engaging in self-harm behaviors.

While DBT was originally developed for specific diagnoses, it can also be beneficial for individuals who struggle with emotional regulation, relationship difficulties, or impulsive behaviors, regardless of having a formal diagnosis. The skills taught in DBT can be useful for a wide range of individuals seeking to enhance their emotional well-being and improve their coping strategies.

Medication is not always needed, but consultation with your GP or psychiatrist will help determine this. DBT can be combined with medication, especially in cases where medication is recommended as part of the treatment plan.

DBT treatment duration can vary depending on the individual’s needs and progress. Generally, DBT treatment is structured and time-limited, typically spanning six months to a year. However, for individuals with more complex or chronic issues, longer-term treatment may be necessary to achieve optimal outcomes.

However, at Omega Wellness Centre we understand that not everyone can commit to a six month program. Therefore we offer a DBT-informed program, that is 12 sessions over 6 weeks.

Mindfulness is a key component of DBT. It involves bringing one’s attention to the present moment, without judgment or attachment. Mindfulness exercises are taught to help individuals develop awareness of their thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations, which can assist in regulating emotions and reducing impulsive behaviors.

DBT has been found to be effective in reducing self-harm behaviours and suicidal thoughts. It focuses on providing individuals with skills to regulate intense emotions, increase distress tolerance, and improve problem-solving abilities. If you are experiencing thoughts of self-harm or suicide, it is important to seek immediate help from a mental health professional or GP.

While it is beneficial to work with a trained therapist to learn and apply DBT skills, there are self-help resources available, including workbooks and online materials, that can provide an introduction to DBT concepts and techniques. However, it is generally recommended to have guidance from a therapist to ensure proper understanding and application of the skills.

Yes, DBT can be adapted for adolescents and children, this is called DBT-A. While we do not offer a DBT-A group at Omega Wellness Centre, we do have psychologists experienced in DBT who could work with your child or young person in an individual session.
